Discovering the Golden Years

This is the first sunrise of the New Millennium.

Fear Retirement
A healthy fear of retirement is a positive thing that motivates you to really take it seriously. Yes FEAR Retirement! Retirement is an important transition and it deserves to be taken seriously. It can be a tragedy in the making for people. Many people fail at retirement. I wish I knew the numbers, the percentages that failed. It depends obviously on what are the criteria for a successful retirement. The fact that you are reading these words puts you way ahead of most people, because you have al least begun to think about your retirement. Keep your fear active, use it as a motivating force to get you across the transition.

What are the criteria for a successful retirement? You the retiree have the right and the obligation to define a set of criteria. You have to judge yourself honestly by your criteria. Let me state my opinions by a set of key questions that I asked myself when I retired.

1. Can my wife and I support ourselves for the next thirty years? Do we have an accurate estimate of our future expenses? Is inflation included?

2. How can I provide for health insurance? What is the current status of our health?

3. Where do I want to live? Do I really have enough data to make a decision on a new location?

4. How will retirement affect my family relations, especially my spouse?

5. Will the retiree continue to work in some capacity after retiring from the current position? Is this a requirement?

6. How will you manage your time?

7. Other than subjects listed above what do you want to achieve with your retirement? Goals? Strategy?

8. Are you being honest with yourself?

9. Can your self image and ego adapt to a lack of job identity.

10. What are you forgetting to consider, overlooking or neglecting to consider?
